Tropic, a biotechnology company based in Norway, has developed a genetically edited banana that can resist browning for up to 12 hours after peeling, all without introducing foreign DNA.
This innovation was made possible using CRISPR gene-editing technology, where scientists switched off a natural enzyme (polyphenol oxidase) responsible for browning in bananas. This means the banana’s taste and nutritional value remain the same, but its shelf life after peeling increases significantly.
