Clubs and Committee
At Mount Royal College, our unwavering focus revolves around nurturing the comprehensive growth of our students, encompassing their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development. As we embrace the dynamic landscape of the 21st century, we recognize the imperative of augmenting traditional education with a new paradigm that equips students to thrive and excel in the ever-evolving digital world.
In response to the rapid pace of change, extensive research conducted by governmental bodies, academic institutions, non-profit organisations, and corporate entities since the early 1980s has highlighted the critical need to cultivate a distinct set of skills and competencies. Referred to as 21st Century Skills, these capabilities have been identified as essential for both the present and future generations.
By fostering the development of 21st Century Skills, we empower our students to become adaptive and agile learners, equipped to face the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead. Our curriculum embodies a multidimensional approach, encompassing critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, communication, digital literacy, and cultural competency.
The Twelve 21st Century Skills
The Twelve 21st Century Skills encompass three key categories, each focusing on empowering students at the core of their educational journey:
Learning Skills, often referred to as the four C's, equip students with the mental processes essential for thriving in a modern work environment
- Critical Thinking: Solving problems by exploring innovative solutions
- Creativity: Encouraging thinking beyond conventional boundaries
- Collaboration: Cultivating effective teamwork and cooperation
- Communication: Developing proficient interpersonal and verbal skills
Literacy Skills, represented by the acronym IMT, emphasise students' ability to navigate information sources and technology:
- Information Literacy: Analyzing and comprehending facts, figures, statistics, and data
- Media Literacy: Understanding the methods and platforms through which information is disseminated
- Technology Literacy: Grasping the functioning and impact of Information Age technologies
Life Skills, known as FLIPS, address the intangible aspects of a student's daily life, encompassing personal and professional qualities:
- Flexibility: Adapting and adjusting plans as circumstances evolve
- Leadership: Inspiring and guiding teams towards shared goals
- Initiative: Taking independent action to initiate projects and strategies
- Productivity: Maintaining efficiency amidst distractions and competing demands
- Social Skills: Cultivating effective interpersonal relationships and networking for mutual benefit
Collectively, these twelve 21st Century Skills shape a comprehensive foundation for students, equipping them with the necessary tools to excel in their future careers. While not an exhaustive checklist of career readiness skills, they represent the essential intersection between career readiness and the demands of the 21st century.
